In 2014, Medicare reduced the surgeon fees for hip and knee replacements as follows:
- TKA from $1553 in 2013 to $1325 in 2014. A 14.6% decrease.
- THA from $1453 in 2013 to $1325 in 2014. An 8.8% decrease.
What does that mean to you?
For surgeons, it means you have to perform an additional 30-50 more joint replacements in 2014 just to make the same money that you did last year.
If you are part of the OR staff or management, expect longer hours as surgeons try to drive more surgeries through your facility.
And hospital administrators, if you want to keep your surgeons, staff and OR management intact you will be required to dive deep into your OR operations to enable more with less. 15% more.
Accelero has been working with hospitals across the country and around the world to create market leading orthopedic programs. Most recently we help a 227-bed suburban hospital increase their joint replacement volume by 23%. See the case study here.
How did we do it?
We used our lean trained staff to remove unnecessary steps and materials in the OR, add new processes to improve patient flow and satisfaction, improve hospital-physician alignment and create a strategic marketing plan to ensure patients and PCPs were aware of the program and the high level of service the hospital provides to their patients.
You can do it too!
